Subject: October is Crime Prevention Month – Safety Tips from the Demarest Police Department

Dear Residents,

As we transition into the fall season and the evenings begin to grow darker earlier, the Demarest Police Department would like to take this opportunity especially during October, which is Crime Prevention Month to remind everyone of the importance of taking proactive steps to protect your home, vehicle, and personal property.

Historically, this time of year brings an increase in opportunistic crimes such as burglaries and thefts from vehicles and porches. While our officers remain dedicated to patrolling and monitoring our neighborhoods, your awareness and participation are essential in keeping our community safe.

Please take a moment to review these crime prevention best practices:

🏠 Secure Your Home

      • Always lock your doors and windows, even when you're home.
      • Use deadbolts, window locks, and security systems when available.
      • If you're going to be away, consider using timers for interior lights to give the appearance someone is home.

💡 Exterior Lighting

      • Keep porch and exterior lights on during evening hours, especially when you’re not home.
      • Motion-activated lighting is a strong deterrent for suspicious activity.

🚗 Vehicle Safety

      • Never leave valuables in plain sight inside your vehicle.
      • Never leave your key fob or keys inside your vehicle.
      • Always lock your vehicle and park in well-lit areas.
      • If possible, park your vehicle inside a garage.

📦 Package Deliveries

      • Schedule deliveries for times when someone will be home.
      • Use delivery instructions to place packages in less visible areas.
      • Consider secure options like a lockbox, delivery locker, or having packages sent to a trusted neighbor or workplace.

👀 See Something, Say Something

      • If you notice suspicious activity in your neighborhood, report it immediately by calling us at 201-768-1540, or dial 911 in an emergency.
      • Timing is everything if something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Last year, thanks to one resident's quick action in reporting a suspicious individual taking a package, officers were able to respond quickly and apprehend a suspect with a history of package thefts. Your awareness truly makes a difference.

We appreciate your cooperation and continued efforts to help keep Demarest safe. If you have any questions or would like more home security tips, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Stay safe,

Acting Chief Frank Visaggio #433
